Surrey NanoSystems developed Vantablack for controlling unwanted light in scientific, space & defence instruments. Its original applications included telescope components, optical sensors, calibration systems & electro-optical imaging and target-acquisition equipment. The company’s launch announcement, published 17 July 2014, already stated:
